How to Summarize a YouTube Video
Not every video needs to be watched start to finish. Here's how to get a quick, accurate summary of one instead.
What you get
ClearScript's Summary feature reads a video's transcript and produces two things: a short overview, usually two to four sentences, and a list of key points pulled directly from what's actually said. It doesn't watch the video or bring in outside knowledge about the topic — everything in the summary comes from the transcript ClearScript already retrieved, the same transcript you'd see on the Transcript tab.
How to summarize a YouTube video
- 1
Get the transcript
Paste a public YouTube link into the input on the ClearScript homepage. See how to get a YouTube transcript for the full walkthrough.
- 2
Open the Summary tab
Once the transcript loads, the result section shows Transcript, Summary, Ask this video, Translate, and Study tabs.
- 3
Click "Create summary"
The summary isn't generated just from opening the tab — click the button and ClearScript generates it from the transcript.
- 4
Read the overview and key points
The overview gives you the gist in a few sentences; the key points below it break out the specific things actually covered.
When a summary is more useful than watching
- Deciding whether a video is worth the time before committing to watch it in full
- Catching up on a long lecture, podcast, or interview without watching the whole thing
- Getting the gist of a video before a meeting or discussion
- Refreshing your memory on a video you already watched a while ago
What the summary won't do
Because it's grounded only in the transcript, a summary is only as good as the caption data behind it — see how YouTube automatic captions work for why quality can vary. If a video doesn't have a transcript at all, there's nothing for Summary to work from either; see why a video might not have a transcript.
